When I was twenty-three years old, my mother passed away, leaving an incredible void in my life. But I was so blessed that there were other women to nurture and love me as my mother would—my Grandmother Paul, my Grandmother Hiers, my Aunt Peggy, my Aunt Trina, my Aunt Jesse—you know these women have been there for me all of my life.

A woman doesn’t have to give birth to you for you to celebrate her on Mother’s Day. A perfect example is my niece, Corrie Hiers. The day that her mother, Jill, put her in my arms, I was hopelessly and totally lost in my love for her, and I know the feeling has been mutual over the twenty-five-year span of her life.
